Our Story & Founding

     Royal Holloway Academy began as the dream of a student who excelled in the arts, but had academic interest that were not being met as a student. During his tenure as a student at Spartanburg High School (2003-2005), Dudley loved the structure of the school he affectionately calls "Spartan High" as he smiles and talk of Mr. Clarke, Mrs. Jamison, and Dr. Moody. Dudley adored the staff, yet needed more action, creativity, and a connection to the arts and literature he loved.

   During the Great Pandemic of 2020, Dudley and the Dudley Foundation for the Arts began to initiate conversations with individuals who could see the proposed visions and understand Dudley's desire to provide an atmosphere that is competitive, engaging, rigorous, and is cast in the Classical Curriculum with the Visual and Performing Arts. 

     Charmed by Dudley's vision, Co-Founder Scott began to research with Dudley the requirements to submit an application to operate a Charter School in the State of South Carolina. Starting as Palmetto Arts Conservatory, the school aimed at working to meet the needs of students in the arts, but lacked an educational plan that was solid, respectable, and proven to provide rigor to scholars. Reflecting on a brief study at Royal Holloway University of London, Dudley recalled the demand and challenge of the curriculum, a Classical Curriculum. Dudley & Scott turned their attention to the Classical Curriculum, understanding the origins, examining data, and developing strategies to implement it paralleled with South Carolina Standards of Excellence. 

         In the Winter of 2021, Dudley, Scott, & the Charter Planning Committee will submit a formal application to the State of South Carolina to operate in Spartanburg County under the Authorization of the Charter Institute at Erskine.
